🎺 Trumpet vine Seeds (Campsis radicans) trumpet vine seeds, Campsis radicans vine, hummingbird vine, fast-growing climber, orange flowers, ornamental vine
Trumpet vine (Campsis radicans) is a vigorous, deciduous woody climbing vine native to the eastern United States and naturalized in parts of western US, Ontario, Europe, and scattered Latin American locations. Known for its rapid growth and spectacular flowering, this plant can reach up to 10 meters (33 ft) in length, making it an excellent choice for arbors, fences, trellises, pergolas, or even trees. Its strong, twining stems allow it to climb over structures, creating a dramatic and colorful display in the garden.
The leaves of Trumpet Vine are opposite, ovate, and pinnate, ranging from 3 to 10 cm in length, with a rich green color that deepens as the plant matures. The flowers are the highlight: they appear in terminal cymes of 4–12 blooms, showing brilliant orange to red petals with a subtle yellow throat. These blossoms are not only visually striking but also highly attractive to hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators, making this vine an excellent choice for wildlife gardens and pollinator-friendly landscapes. Flowering usually begins after several months of warm weather and continues through summer into early autumn.
Hardiness: Trumpet vine is hardy to about -15°C, tolerating light frost with some protection, which allows it to thrive in a range of temperate climates. Its adaptability, combined with minimal care requirements, makes it suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners.
Growth Habit: Deciduous climbing vine with vigorous spreading ability
Leaves: Opposite, ovate, pinnate, dark green at maturity
Flowers: Orange to red, 4–12 blooms per cyme, very attractive to pollinators
Blooming Period: Summer to early autumn, depending on climate
Seeds: Paper-thin, brown, contained in pods; germinate easily after stratification
Support Needs: Strong trellis, arbor, fence, or tree required for optimal growth
This vine thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. While it is adaptable to various soil types, it prefers well-draining, moderately fertile soil. Over-fertilization, particularly with nitrogen, may encourage excessive leaf growth at the expense of flowers. Regular watering is required during dry periods, especially for young plants, but mature Trumpet Vine is relatively drought-tolerant once established.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Well-draining, moderately fertile soil
Watering: Regular, more frequent during hot seasons
Fertilization: Minimal; excessive nitrogen inhibits flowering
Propagation is straightforward from seeds after cold stratification, or via hardwood cuttings taken during the dormant season. Plants grown from seed may take several months to establish, but the process is simple for home gardeners.
Seed Preparation: Stratify seeds in moist sand in the refrigerator for 4–6 weeks
Sowing Medium: Use a well-draining seed-starting mix
Planting Depth: Sow seeds 1–2 cm deep
Temperature: Maintain 20–25°C for optimal germination
Moisture: Keep soil evenly moist, avoiding waterlogging
Light: Provide bright indirect light for seedlings
Germination Time: Typically 2–4 weeks after stratification
Transplanting: Move seedlings to larger pots once they have 2–3 true leaves, and gradually harden off before planting outdoors
Strong supports such as trellises, arbors, fences, or trees are essential
Vines can become very vigorous; regular pruning prevents damage to nearby structures
Annual pruning after flowering helps control size, maintain shape, and encourage blooms
When trained on pergolas or walls, Trumpet Vine creates striking vertical displays
Can become invasive if not regularly managed
Vigorous growth may damage weak structures
Flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators
Seeds are fresh and germination-tested
