🌿 Allspice Seeds (Pimenta dioica)
💰 Price: Package of 6 seeds
Allspice (Pimenta dioica), also known as Jamaica pepper, pimento, or newspice, is a tropical evergreen tree valued for its fragrant unripe berries, which combine the flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Native to the Greater Antilles, southern Mexico, and Central America, Allspice has been a staple spice in global cuisines for centuries, first named “allspice” by the English in 1621.
The tree is slow-growing, reaching 10–18 meters (32–60 ft) in height under tropical conditions. It has glossy, dark green leaves and produces clusters of small white flowers followed by round green berries that turn dark brown when dried. Each berry typically contains 2 seeds, which are the source of the spice.
Hardiness: Allspice is hardy to about 5°C, meaning it thrives in tropical and subtropical climates. Young seedlings are frost-sensitive, so they require protection in cooler areas or indoor cultivation. Mature trees tolerate short periods of mild cold but are best grown in warm, humid conditions.
🌿 Plant Features
Growth Habit: Slow-growing, evergreen tropical tree
Leaves: Glossy, dark green, aromatic when crushed
Flowers: Small, white, clustered; followed by green berries
Fruit/Seeds: Berries contain 2 seeds; dried berries used as spice
Height: 10–18 m in natural conditions; can be pruned for container growth
Soil & Water: Prefers rich, well-draining soil with consistent moisture
Sun Exposure: Full sun to partial shade
Allspice thrives in warm, humid climates but can also be grown in containers or greenhouses in colder regions. The tree requires regular watering, especially when young, and benefits from occasional fertilization with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer.
🧑🍳 Culinary Uses
Allspice is essential in Caribbean jerk seasoning, Mexican moles, Middle Eastern stews, and American desserts like pies and cakes. It is also a key ingredient in German sausages, British baking, and even Cincinnati chili. In Jamaica, the wood and leaves are used to smoke meats, giving them a rich, unmistakable aroma.
Both dried berries and seeds can be used in cooking. Seeds can be soaked and planted to grow your own spice tree at home, providing a rare, aromatic, homegrown spice.
🌱 Sowing Instructions
Seed Preparation: Gently crack dried berries to remove seeds; soak seeds in warm water 24–48 hours to improve germination
Sowing Medium: Use a well-draining tropical seed-starting mix or a combination of peat and sand
Planting Depth: Sow seeds 1–2 cm deep
Temperature: Maintain 20–28°C for optimal germination and early growth
Moisture: Keep soil evenly moist, not waterlogged
Light: Bright, indirect sunlight is best for seedlings
Germination Time: 2–4 weeks, though some seeds may take longer
Transplanting: Move seedlings to larger pots once true leaves appear, and gradually acclimate to outdoor or greenhouse conditions
