🌿 Tree Grape, also known as Wild Grape or Namibian Grape, is a rare and fascinating succulent from South Africa and Namibia. Cyphostemma juttae is highly valued by succulent collectors for its unusual swollen trunk, sculptural caudex and attractive canopy of blue green leaves.

The plant develops a thick, succulent, tree like trunk covered with distinctive papery bark that peels as the plant matures. Above the trunk, the long serrated leaves create an attractive canopy, giving every specimen a unique appearance. Its unusual structure makes it an excellent choice for collectors of caudiciform and exotic succulent plants.

Tree Grape thrives in warm conditions and performs particularly well around 35°C (90°F). It can tolerate temperatures down to approximately -2°C (28°F), although protection should be provided when frost or prolonged cold is expected.

Provide full sun to partial shade. In particularly hot climates, protection from harsh afternoon sunlight can help prevent excessive stress. A fast draining cactus or succulent growing medium is recommended.

The plant is drought tolerant once established, although it benefits from moderate watering during its active summer growing season. Allow the growing medium to drain well and avoid prolonged waterlogging around the roots.

Light feeding during the active growth period can support healthy development. Avoid excessive fertilization, particularly when the plant is dormant.

Seed Preparation: Lightly scratch the seeds using sandpaper or a nail file to help improve water absorption.

Soaking: Soak the prepared seeds in water for approximately 24 hours before sowing.

Container: Sow one seed per approximately 2 inch (5 cm) pot to minimize root disturbance during early development.

Sowing Mix: Use approximately 50% potting soil and 50% perlite to create a light and fast draining growing medium.

Sowing Depth: Cover the seeds with approximately 1/2 inch (1 cm) of soil.

Moisture: Keep the medium moist during germination but never saturated or soggy.

Germination Temperature: Maintain approximately 18–24°C (65–75°F).

Germination Time: Germination is variable and can take anywhere from several days to several months. Patience is important when growing Tree Grape from seed.

After seedlings emerge, provide filtered sunlight initially and gradually acclimatize the young plants to stronger light as they develop.

Because the plant can eventually become several feet tall, provide a sufficiently large and stable container as the plant matures. Repot when necessary using a very well drained succulent growing medium.

During winter dormancy, the plant may lose its leaves. This is a natural part of its growth cycle and exposes the distinctive caudex and peeling trunk.

Reduce watering as the plant enters its winter dormant period. Avoid keeping the soil continuously wet during dormancy, as excessive moisture combined with cool temperatures can damage the roots.
