The White Mulberry (Morus alba) is a fast-growing, hardy tree species native to northern China. It typically reaches 10–20 meters in height and is widely cultivated and naturalized worldwide. Known by various local names such as शहतूत in Hindi, Tuta in Sanskrit, Tuti in Marathi, and Toot in Persian, this versatile tree has a long history of cultivation and diverse applications. 🌿
Botanical Description
White mulberry is a short-lived but fast-growing small to medium-sized tree. On young shoots, the leaves can reach up to 30 cm long, being deeply lobed with rounded lobes. On older trees, leaves are generally 5–15 cm, unlobed, cordate at the base, rounded or acuminate at the tip, and serrated. Leaves are mostly deciduous in temperate regions but can be evergreen in tropical areas.
The tree produces single-sex catkins, with male catkins 2–3.5 cm long and female catkins 1–2 cm long. Flowers can appear on separate trees or on the same tree. The fruit is 1–2.5 cm long, often deep purple in the wild, but white to pink in cultivated varieties. Fruits are sweet, though milder than red or black mulberries. Seeds are dispersed by birds, which eat the fruit.
Scientifically notable, white mulberry catkins release pollen at over half the speed of sound (approx. 560 km/h), making it the fastest known plant movement. 🌬️
