Indian Strawberry (Duchesnea indica, also classified as Potentilla indica) is a rare and attractive creeping ground cover plant that produces small yellow flowers followed by bright red strawberry-like fruits. It forms an evergreen carpet and spreads naturally through creeping runners, making it suitable for ground cover planting and for growing over walls.
Indian Strawberry is well suited to moist, well-drained soil and a partially sunny position. Once established, the plant develops runners that root and produce new plants, gradually forming a dense carpet of light green foliage.

🌼 Flowers and Fruits
The small yellow flowers begin appearing in spring and continue to develop throughout the growing season. Unlike true strawberries, which generally produce white or slightly pink flowers, Indian Strawberry produces distinctive yellow flowers.
The flowers are followed by small red fruits that resemble strawberries. The fruits are edible but are generally considered to have very little flavor. Birds are attracted to the bright red fruits.
🌿 Ground Cover Growth
Indian Strawberry spreads by creeping stolons. These runners root at the nodes and produce new crowns, allowing the plant to gradually form a dense ground covering carpet.
The plant is particularly useful for covering soil beneath trees, planting on grassy slopes, or allowing the foliage to trail over walls and other garden structures.

Indian Strawberry is native to eastern and southern Asia and has been introduced to many other regions as an ornamental ground cover plant.

Indian Strawberry prefers soil that remains reasonably moist while still providing good drainage. Once established, the creeping growth habit allows the plant to spread naturally across suitable ground.
🌱 Sowing Instructions
Sowing Time: January to April indoors
Sowing Method: Surface sowing
Use a quality seed-starting mix and small pots or seed trays. Sow the seeds on the surface of the growing medium and gently press them into the mix.
Keep the soil damp but not wet and protect the seeds from direct light during germination. Covering the starter tray or pots with a plastic bag can help maintain humidity until germination occurs.
🌿 Transplanting
When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them carefully into approximately 3 inch pots.
Grow the young plants under cooler conditions until they are sufficiently developed for outdoor planting.
After the danger of frost has passed, gradually harden the plants outdoors over approximately 7–10 days before planting them into their permanent position.
💧 Watering and Aftercare
Keep the soil consistently moist while young plants are becoming established. Avoid excessive watering and permanently saturated soil.
Once established, the plant spreads through runners and can gradually develop a dense ground cover.
