Giant Staghorn Fern Seeds (Platycerium Superbum)

Price for Package of 50 seeds

🌿 Platycerium superbum, commonly known as Giant Staghorn Fern or Staghorn Fern, is a spectacular epiphytic fern native to Queensland and northern New South Wales in Australia. It naturally grows on trees and occasionally on rocks, developing an impressive structure of broad sterile nest fronds and long, forked fertile fronds.

This unusual fern is particularly valued by collectors because of its dramatic mature appearance. Unlike some other Platycerium species, Platycerium superbum does not produce plantlets. A single plant continues to enlarge year after year, eventually forming an impressive specimen.

🌡️ Temperature Resistance and Winter Hardiness

Winter Hardiness: This is a tender, frost-sensitive fern. The supplied growing information states that it does not tolerate temperatures below 1°C (34°F).

RHS Hardiness: The Royal Horticultural Society classifies Platycerium superbum as H1A, meaning it is best grown under glass all year at temperatures above 15°C (59°F). ([rhs.org.uk](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/19712/platycerium-superbum/details?utm_source=chatgpt.com))

In practical cultivation, protect the fern from frost, freezing temperatures and cold drying winds. In temperate climates it is best grown indoors, in a heated greenhouse or conservatory. The RHS recommends a sheltered position and filtered light. ([rhs.org.uk](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/19712/platycerium-superbum/details?utm_source=chatgpt.com))

🌱 Plant Features

Plant Type: Evergreen epiphytic fern

Family: Polypodiaceae

Botanical Name: Platycerium superbum

Common Name: Giant Staghorn Fern

Native Range: Queensland and northern New South Wales, Australia

Growth Habit: Epiphytic and occasionally lithophytic

Mature Height: Approximately 1.5–2.5 m

Mature Spread: Approximately 1.5–2.5 m

Foliage: Evergreen

Hardiness: Tender, best protected above 1°C (34°F)

Staghorn ferns produce two distinct types of fronds. The broad sterile basal fronds form a nest-like structure that embraces the host and collects organic material. In mature specimens, this humus-collecting bowl can become extremely large.

The fertile fronds are completely different in appearance. They hang downward from the plant and develop long, deeply forked, antler-like blades that can reach approximately 200 cm in length. Brown sori containing spores develop on the undersides of fertile fronds.

☀️ Growing Conditions

Light: Bright filtered light or partial shade

Humidity: High humidity is beneficial

Position: Sheltered from strong drying winds

Growing Medium: Coarse, well-aerated epiphytic medium

Moisture: Moist but never permanently saturated

In nature, Platycerium superbum grows high in trees where it receives plenty of filtered light beneath the canopy. Dense shade should therefore be avoided. Bright filtered light combined with good humidity encourages strong growth. ([rhs.org.uk](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/19712/platycerium-superbum/details?utm_source=chatgpt.com))

Overwatering must be avoided. If the central growing medium remains continuously wet, rot can develop and eventually kill the plant. Intermittent soaking followed by proper drainage is preferable to keeping the growing medium constantly saturated.

🌱 Growing Giant Staghorn Fern from Spores

Growing Platycerium superbum from spores is possible when the correct warm, humid conditions are provided. The spores should be sown onto a suitable sterile, moisture-retentive but well-aerated propagation medium.

Maintain high humidity and stable warmth during germination. Avoid direct sunlight on the developing spores and young gametophytes. Once established, gradually provide brighter filtered light while maintaining good humidity.

Because ferns reproduce through spores rather than conventional flowering seeds, early development is considerably different from ordinary seed-grown plants. Patience and stable conditions are important during propagation.

💧 Watering

During active growth, water thoroughly when necessary and allow excess water to drain away. The growing medium should remain moist but should never remain saturated for prolonged periods.

Intermittent soaking of the root area can be beneficial. The supplied growing information recommends soaking approximately once a week, depending on rainfall and environmental conditions.

Reduce watering during cooler periods and always avoid allowing the central growing medium to remain constantly wet.

🌿 Feeding

Staghorn ferns respond well to moderate feeding during active growth. Liquid organic fertilizer can be applied periodically according to the manufacturers instructions.

The supplied growing information also recommends placing a small quantity of slow-release fertilizer into the central collecting bowl at intervals. Small pieces of aged, hardened cow manure can also be used as an organic nutrient source.

A slightly acidic growing environment is preferred.

🪵 Mounting and Cultivation

Because Platycerium superbum is naturally epiphytic and eventually becomes very large, mounting is generally more suitable than growing it permanently in a conventional plant pot.

Suitable mounting materials include cypress wood, tree fern fiber plaques and wire baskets. Clay pots can also be used when positioned sideways to imitate the plants natural epiphytic growth habit.

To mount the fern, place several handfuls of suitable growing medium onto the mounting surface and form a rounded mound. Position the plant so that the growing bud is slightly below the center of the mount and the basal fronds are in contact with the growing medium.

Secure the plant using plastic stripping or suitable non-copper wire. Copper wire should not be used.

🔄 Remounting

As the fern grows, it will eventually require a larger mounting surface. Remounting frequency depends on the size of the original mount, the rate at which the growing medium decomposes and the growth rate of the individual plant.

When the basal fronds begin reaching the sides of the mounting surface, it is time to provide additional space. Very large specimens can become difficult to remove from their original mounts, so periodically enlarging the existing mount can be a practical alternative.

🌿 Support and Maintenance

Platycerium superbum requires no conventional pruning. Remove only damaged or dead material when necessary and avoid damaging the basal nest fronds, which are an important part of the plants natural structure.

Protect the plant from strong drying winds, sudden temperature drops and prolonged exposure to direct harsh sunlight.

🏡 Garden and Display Uses

Giant Staghorn Fern is an exceptional specimen for tropical displays, heated greenhouses, conservatories and indoor plant collections. Its natural epiphytic habit makes it particularly suitable for mounting on wood or other suitable structures.

The combination of enormous nest fronds and long antler-like fertile fronds creates a dramatic architectural display that becomes more impressive as the plant matures.

⚠️ Important Notes

Platycerium superbum is frost tender. Protect it whenever temperatures approach 1°C (34°F), and do not expose it to freezing temperatures.

Dense shade should be avoided because the species requires good filtered light for healthy development. At the same time, harsh direct sunlight can damage the fronds.

Do not keep the central growing medium continuously wet. Excessive moisture can cause rot, particularly when temperatures are low.

This fern is naturally epiphytic and can eventually become very large. A suitable mounting system should therefore be planned as the plant develops.
