Mespilus germanica, commonly known as medlar, is a hardy shrub or small tree 🌳 that produces unusual fruits 🍏. These fruits are cultivated for their distinctive ability to ripen through a process called "bletting," which transforms the hard and acidic fruits into a soft, sweet pulp, perfect for culinary creations 🍰🍯. Medlar is historically significant, with evidence of its cultivation dating back to Roman times 🏛️.
Origins & Related Species:
Native to southwest Asia and southeastern Europe 🌍, especially the Black Sea coast in Turkey 🇹🇷, Mespilus germanica has been cultivated for over 3000 years 🏺. In fact, it was one of the most commonly grown fruits in ancient Greece (~700 BC) and Rome (~200 BC). While Mespilus germanica was the only known species of medlar until 1990, a related species, Mespilus canescens, was discovered in North America 🌎. Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) is also a distant relative 🌿.
Ecological Needs & Growth:
Medlar trees are deciduous and generally shrub-like 🌿, growing up to 8 m (26 ft) tall 🌳. These trees thrive in sunny, dry locations ☀️ and slightly acidic soil 🌱. The leaves are dark green, turning a vibrant red in autumn 🍁. In late spring 🌸, medlar trees produce white hermaphrodite flowers, pollinated by bees 🐝. The fruits themselves are reddish-brown pomes, about 2–3 cm in diameter 🍂, with persistent sepals giving them a hollow appearance. Medlars have a long lifespan, ranging from 30–50 years.
Historically, medlar was a highly sought-after fruit 🍏, but it has become rare in modern times 🌿. Medlar fruits are hard and tannic when harvested, but after exposure to frost or storage, they turn soft and sweet ✨. Culinary uses include medlar jelly, medlar cheese (similar to lemon curd), and delicious desserts, beverages, and tarts 🍰🍯☕. The medlar fruit is also popular for making wine 🍷. In traditional medicinal practices in Iran 🌿, medlars were used for treatments of diarrhea, bloating, throat abscesses, and fever 💊.
Some well-known medlar cultivars 🌳 include 'Hollandia', 'Nottingham', 'Russian', 'Dutch' (also called Giant/Monstrous), 'Royal', 'Breda Giant', and 'Large Russian' 🍂.
Pretreatment: Scarify seeds with sandpaper and soak for 24 hours 💧 to improve germination.
Stratification:
2 weeks at room temperature (15–20°C) 🌡️
2 months at ~4°C, followed by bright conditions (no direct sunlight) at 20–25°C 🌞
Sowing depth: Sow seeds at a shallow depth of 1–3 mm 🌱, as light is required for germination.
Soil mix: Use a well-drained mix of coir or sowing mix with sand or perlite 🌿 for good drainage.
Temperature for germination: 20–25°C 🌡️ is ideal.
Germination time: Expect germination in 2–8 weeks, though it may take longer, up to a few months ⏳.
Location: Bright, moist (but not wet) conditions are ideal 🌿☀️.
Watering: Regular watering is important during the growing season 🌱.
