🌳 Castanea mollissima, known as the Chinese Chestnut, is a deciduous tree native to China, Korea, and Taiwan, prized for its delicious nuts, resilient wood, and remarkable disease resistance. Belonging to the Fagaceae family, it typically grows up to 20 meters tall, forming a broad, spreading crown.
🍃 Botanical description:
Leaves are 10–22 cm long, with sharply toothed edges and a soft downy texture – the source of the Latin name mollissima (“soft”).
Flowers bloom in catkins 4–20 cm long; male flowers dominate the spike, while female blooms cluster near the base.
The fruit is a spiny burr (cupule) 4–8 cm wide containing 2–3 glossy brown nuts, each about 2–3 cm in diameter.
🌏 Distribution & habitat:
The Chinese chestnut grows naturally in mountainous regions and valleys across East Asia, from Anhui and Fujian to Sichuan and Yunnan, and as far as Taiwan and Korea. It thrives in acidic, loamy soil, prefers full sun, and can grow from sea level up to 2,800 m altitude. Its moderate growth rate and adaptability make it ideal for both orchards and reforestation projects.
🦋 Ecological significance & blight resistance:
Unlike its American cousin (Castanea dentata), the Chinese chestnut evolved alongside the chestnut blight fungus (Cryphonectria parasitica) and developed strong natural resistance. Although not entirely immune, it usually suffers only minor damage. This resistance has made C. mollissima essential in cross-breeding programs aimed at restoring blight-resistant American chestnut populations.
🌰 Nut quality and uses:
Chinese chestnuts are sweet, nutritious, and rich in carbohydrates and protein. The nuts can be roasted, boiled, or ground into flour and are a major food source for both humans and wildlife. In China, over 300 cultivars exist, divided into five major regional types (Northern, Yangtze, Sichuan–Guizhou, Southern, Southwestern). Famous varieties such as ‘Kuling’, ‘Meiling’, and ‘Nanking’ bear large nuts up to 4 cm in diameter, often praised as some of the best-tasting chestnuts in Asia.

The wood is dense, durable, and resistant to decay – used for furniture, flooring, and fencing.
The tree’s blossoms attract pollinators, and the nuts feed wildlife such as deer and birds.
Its compact size and ornamental foliage also make it suitable for landscape planting.

Sow fresh seeds in autumn or early spring in well-drained, acidic soil.
Keep soil moist but avoid waterlogging.
Germination occurs best at 18–24 °C.
Trees begin producing nuts in 4–6 years, with full yield after 10 years.
Requires cross-pollination, so plant at least two genetically distinct trees.
