Bael (Aegle marmelos), also known as Bengal quince, Stone Apple, Wood Apple, Bilva, or Bilvapatra, is a tree native to India and naturalized across Southeast Asia. Sacred to Hindus, its fruits are widely used in traditional medicine and culinary applications.
🌳 Botanical Information Bael Seeds - Stone Apple (Aegle marmelos):
Bael is the only member of the monotypic genus Aegle. It is a medium-sized, slender, aromatic, spiny tree, growing up to 18 m tall, with trifoliate leaves. Naturally found in dry forests of hills and plains in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand. It is also cultivated in Java, the Philippines, and Fiji.
The tree is highly adaptable, thriving in soils with pH 5–10, tolerant of waterlogging, and able to withstand temperatures from -7°C to 48°C. A pronounced dry season is required for fruiting.
🍈 Fruit:
The bael fruit has a hard, woody shell, green, gray, or yellow, maturing in about 11 months. It can reach the size of a large grapefruit or pomelo. The fibrous yellow pulp is aromatic, described as tasting like marmalade and smelling of roses, with many seeds encased in slimy mucilage.

Eaten fresh or dried.
Fresh juice can be strained and sweetened to make drinks like sharbat or Bela Pana, mixing pulp with water, sugar, and lime juice. One large fruit yields 5–6 liters of drink.
Dried fruit is sliced and sun-dried, then simmered in water.
Leaves and young shoots can be eaten as salad greens.
