Russet Buffaloberry (Shepherdia canadensis), also known as Soopolallie, Soapberry, or Foamberry, is a hardy, adaptable shrub that produces edible red berries. The berries have a bitter taste but are used by various First Nations peoples to prepare a traditional food called sxusem or "Indian ice-cream." These berries are not eaten raw but processed by crushing and mixing with other fruits, creating a sweet and somewhat bitter foam-like treat. 🧑🌾
Native to North America, Russet Buffaloberry thrives in a range of environments, from forests to thickets, and can be found all the way to the Arctic Circle. The plant is deciduous and can grow from 3 to 13 feet in height. It's also well-suited for wildlife food and shelter due to its cold, heat, drought, and salt tolerance. 🌍
This shrub is a fast grower and can be used as a wildlife shelter, windbreak, or erosion control plant. It’s also ideal for native plant gardens and informal hedges.
