Ornamental Pink Pampas Grass Seeds (Cortaderia Selloana) – Tall ornamental grass producing elegant pink flushed feathery plumes above large fountain like clumps, ideal for sunny landscapes and dried arrangements.
🌾 Ornamental Pink Pampas Grass (Cortaderia selloana) is a spectacular hardy perennial ornamental grass valued for its tall, graceful growth and distinctive pink flushed feathery plumes. The dense fountain like clumps of narrow green leaves create an impressive architectural feature, while the large flower plumes provide exceptional seasonal interest.
This unusual pink form is particularly attractive when planted beside water, in large sunny borders, or as a dramatic specimen in a well drained lawn. The flowering display generally begins in late summer and can continue well into winter as the plumes remain decorative after flowering.
Hardiness: approximately -20°C to -15°C (−4°F to 5°F) for hardy forms of Cortaderia selloana, corresponding to the RHS H6 classification. Actual cold tolerance depends on the cultivar, plant age, drainage, exposure and winter conditions.
The supplied product information lists USDA Hardiness Zones 7–10. Young plants should receive additional protection during their first winters, particularly in areas exposed to severe frost.
Good winter drainage is important because cold, permanently wet soil can damage the crown. In colder climates, a layer of dry mulch around the base can provide additional protection.
Botanical Name: Cortaderia selloana
Common Name: Ornamental Pink Pampas Grass
Plant Type: Hardy perennial ornamental grass
Flower Color: Pale pink to pink flushed
Bloom Time: Late summer
Plant Height: Approximately 1–3.6 m (3–12 ft), depending on growing conditions and plant maturity
Plant Spread: Approximately 1 m (36 in) or more when mature
Foliage: Strap like leaves approximately 2 cm (3/4 in) wide and up to 1 m (3 ft) long
Flower Plumes: Up to approximately 2.5 m (8 ft) above the foliage
Position: Full sun to light shade
Soil: Fertile, well drained loamy soil
The plant forms large tussocks of narrow leaves arranged in dense fountain like clumps. The tall flower stems rise dramatically above the foliage and carry large feathery plumes.
The main ornamental attraction is the spectacular pink flushed flower plume. The flowering display develops during late summer, when tall plumes suddenly rise above the foliage.
Female plants generally produce wider, fuller and more decorative flower plumes, while male plants produce thinner and more elongated plumes.
The plumes can remain attractive into winter. As frost and cold weather arrive, the foliage can turn golden brown while the dried flower heads continue providing structure and texture.
Light: Full sun to light shade
Soil: Fertile and well drained loamy soil
Water: Average to dry once established
Drought Tolerance: Good once established
Pampas Grass is adaptable to a range of soil types but performs best in fertile, well drained ground. A sunny position encourages strong growth and flowering.
Avoid excessively wet conditions, particularly during winter. Excessive watering can encourage foliage growth while reducing the production of attractive flower plumes.
Propagation: Seeds
Pretreatment: None required
Stratification: None required
Sowing Time: All year round when suitable protected growing conditions are available
Sowing Depth: Surface sow. The seeds require light to germinate, so sprinkle them onto the surface of the substrate and gently press them into contact with the growing medium.
Sowing Mix: Coir or quality sowing mix combined with sand or perlite.
Germination Temperature: 20–25°C (68–77°F)
Location: Bright position with good light.
Moisture: Keep the substrate constantly moist but not wet.
Germination Time: Variable. Germination occurs when suitable temperature and moisture conditions are maintained, and patience may be required.
Scatter the seeds thinly over a well drained seed starting medium and gently press them into the surface. Do not bury them deeply because light is required for germination.
Maintain a stable temperature between 20 and 25°C and keep the growing medium evenly moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.
Once seedlings appear, provide bright light and gradually improve ventilation. When seedlings are sufficiently large to handle, transplant them carefully into individual pots.
Young plants should be grown on in protected conditions until they are well established. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions before planting into their final position.
Young Pampas Grass plants may require two or three years before producing their first impressive plumes. This is normal and does not necessarily indicate a problem.
Avoid excessive feeding. Too much fertiliser can produce overly lush foliage and may reduce the quality of flowering.
Established plants that fail to produce plumes may have been overwatered or overfed. Providing good drainage, plenty of sunlight and moderate feeding can help encourage flowering.
As the tussock becomes larger, old dead foliage can accumulate within the clump. Cutting back and combing the plant during late winter or spring helps remove old material and maintain a more compact appearance.
The flower plumes can remain attractive throughout winter, while the foliage may become golden brown after exposure to frost.
In colder regions, protect young plants with a dry mulch around the crown. Established plants are more resistant to cold, particularly when grown in fertile but well drained soil.
Never burn Pampas Grass in a domestic garden. The original cultivation information notes that burning was traditionally used to control plants in native habitats, but this presents a serious fire risk and can also harm wildlife using the dense grass as shelter.
The attractive pink plumes can be dried and used as focal or secondary elements in dried flower arrangements.
For drying, cut the flower stems when the plumes are at their peak and hang them upside down in a cool, dark and dry location until completely dry.
The dried plumes can provide long lasting decorative texture indoors and are particularly effective in large arrangements.
• Architectural planting
• Cottage and informal gardens
• Mediterranean style gardens
• Drought resistant landscapes
• Flower borders and beds
• Low maintenance gardens
• Specimen planting
• Waterside planting
• Large landscape features
• Dried flower arrangements
The large scale and distinctive pink plumes make this Pampas Grass especially effective as a focal point. It can be planted beside water, in a sunny lawn or at the back of a large border where the tall flowering stems can rise above surrounding vegetation.
The leaf margins are sharp and can cause cuts. Always wear gloves and suitable protective clothing when pruning, transplanting or handling mature plants.
Give mature specimens plenty of space because the tussocks can become very large and congested with age.
Avoid excessive watering and fertilisation, particularly when the objective is to produce abundant flower plumes.
Local regulations should be checked before planting Pampas Grass because some forms of Cortaderia can become invasive in favourable climates.
