Cardiospermum halicacabum, commonly known as Balloon Plant or Love in a Puff, is a tropical and subtropical climbing herb native to Africa, Australia, and North America.
Its name comes from the distinctive balloon-like green pods that contain dark seeds marked with a white heart shape — hence the genus name Cardiospermum, meaning “heart seed.”

The plant is often found growing along roadsides, riverbanks, and open fields, sometimes considered a weed in certain regions.
In New Zealand, it is listed under the National Pest Plant Accord, while in Bermuda it’s classified as a Category 1 Invasive Plant. Despite this, Balloon Plant has been valued for centuries in traditional medicine and Ayurvedic healing practices across Asia.

Ancient Sanskrit texts describe Cardiospermum halicacabum as demulcent, stomachic, and rubefacient, recommended for rheumatism, piles, and nervous diseases.
